Have You Ever Gotten Into A Novel That Comes With It's Own Reading Soundtrack?

 Besides the day job as a surgeon and an aspiring novelist, I also own a record label, Ripple Music -- which for 15 years has become one of the world's leading record labels for what's called heavy psychedelic rock.  


With a large fanbase, I was wondering how I could integrate the novel with the record label, and came up with the idea of a "reading soundtrack."  Not music to play as you read (don't know about you, but I can't do that.  I like silence when I read.) But rather an album of the book, where each song, put together, line up to tell the story in music, mood, feeling, or lyric, of Deadly Vision. 


I went to some of our biggest artists, like Wino (of The Obsessed), Dave Angstrom (of Hermano),  Borracho, Gary Arce (of Yawning Man) and many others, and gave them a brief paragraph of the book.  They went to work and turned in an amazing album of mood and texture that accompanies and fleshes out the book. 


Speaking of the band, Borracho.  I was speaking with the boys about my then upcoming novel, Deadly Vision, and told them I was doing a "reading" soundtrack.  After a brief description of the theme, the guys went to work and shortly thereafter turned in this magnificent piece of music, "Theme from Deadly Vision."   Yes, so good, it became the theme for the whole book, from the opening "heartbeat" to the introspective passages, the vague haunting feel, to the the pounding aggressive intense riffing.  That's Deadly Vision.

Gems Amongst the Dust - Lessons from the Slush Pile

I've been working on Deadly Vision for more years than I care to count, and received more rejection letters than you'd care to count, or would reasonably subject yourself to.  But I believed in the story and knew that others would too, if I could only write it in a way that would capture their imaginations and attention.  So I went to writing conferences, took classes, read many books, and constantly worked to improve my writing and my storytelling skills.   But one surprising place that provided an immeasurable amount of guidance and information was rejection letters.  In general, I never accepted rejection letters as a rejection of the story -- just where I was with it at that moment in time, with that particular agent.  I even went so far as to file my rejection letters not in a file named "Rejections" but in one I named "Try Again."   Once the story was better, they'd hear from me again, whether they wanted to or not.  But before I filed...
